Alabama Law on Salvage Titles

Salvage cars for sale within 100 miles of Birmingham AL

The law in Alabama regarding salvage autos states that if your vehicle was in an accident and was totaled or had flood damage and was declared a total loss by your insurance company and you were issued a salvage title then it is illegal to drive the car or truck with a salvage title in the state of Alabama.

If you received a salvage title there’s a few things you can do:

1. you can take the money the insurance company pays you for your loss and they will deal with the vehicle.

2. you can sell the parts from the vehicle or sell it the way it is for parts.

3. you can sell it as is as a salvage title for someone else to restore, but there’s a catch – it has to be restored in Alabama.

4. you can rebuild the car or truck yourself and obtain a rebuilt title so that it is legal to drive again. If you choose this option keep in mind you will need to get a rebuilders license (see below for more info) and the vehicle will need to be rebuilt to its prior condition.

5. Pay someone who has a rebuilders license to rebuild it for you.

If you choose option 4 or 5 the person who rebuilt it (the one with the rebuilders license) will need to have the auto inspected by the DMV or Highway Patrol to make sure it is up to standards. Also, it’s a good idea to keep all receipts for any parts you used to prove there were no stolen parts used.
Once you’ve completed all the paperwork, paid the required fees and the auto passes inspection you will receive a rebuilt license plate and rebuilt title.

To apply for a rebuilders license contact:

Alabama Department of Revenue
License Tax Section
P.O. Box 327550
Montgomery, AL 36132-7550
